Joan Miró i Ferrà (1893 – 1983) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and ceramicist born in Barcelona. A museum dedicated to his work, the Fundació Joan Miró, was established in his native city of Barcelona in 1975, and another, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established in his adoptive city of Palma de Mallorca in 1981.
Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onwards, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods as a way of supporting bourgeois society, and famously declared an “assassination of painting” in favour of upsetting the visual elements of established painting
ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS
An original fine art lithograph is not just a cheap mass produced print. The process is far more complicated and therefore valuable and collectible. In short, Lithography is a method of printing using a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a completely smooth surface to which the design & ink is applied. A limited edition lithograph is an original graphic created by the artist in a small print edition or run. The process of printmaking requires a balance of creativity and skill using traditional techniques. It’s the amount of impressions ‘pulled’ from each ‘plate’ or stone that gives each print its scarcity. Because of the unique history of each item, collectible prints often appreciate in value over time due to their rarity and age. This makes them an excellent investment!
CATALOGUE RAISONNE
A catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known artworks by an artist either in a particular medium or all media.
The works are described in such a way that they may be reliably identified by third parties.
There are many variations, both broader and narrower than “all the works” or “one artist”. The parameters may be restricted to one type of art work by one artist or widened to all the works by a group of artists.
It can take many years to complete a catalogue raisonné and large teams of researchers are sometimes employed on the task.
Early examples consisted of two distinct parts, a biography and the catalogue itself.
Their modern counterpart is the critical catalogue which may contain personal views of the author.
Please note that the photos do not do the Artwork justice, as it much nicer in real life! Please do not hesitate to mail me for more photos or descriptions as required. Also note that these Prints are Vintage and so they are not brand new.
By their nature there may be signs of handling or in some cases slight foxing.
